A readable translation of book 1

I’ve come across a translation of the first four chapters of the Ashtadhyayi. Some of its translations are slightly incorrect, and the orthography is questionable at times. But regardless the style is simple enough that most people should be able to understand it. It also helps that the rules are color-coded:

  • Green for rules of interpretation (परिभाषा)
  • White for ordinary rules (विधि)
  • Yellow for definitions (संज्ञा)
  • Purple for rules of analogy (अतिदेश)
  • Red for restrictions (नियम)
  • White (with colored border) for governing rules (अधिकार)

Note the many red rules in 1.3, which give the usage of आत्मनेपद in excruciating detail.
